These five institutions provide expertise in Tropical Medicine in its broadest sense, and the opportunity for clinical training in a wide variety of disciplines, including infectious diseases and tropical medicine, but also paediatrics, gastroenterology, respiratory medicine, GU medicine, microbiology, neurology, nutrition, public health medicine and ophthalmology, among others.

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is one of two institutions in the country which runs a Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Health course, completion of which is a requirement for Wellcome Trust Clinical Training Fellows in Tropical Medicine, and the five institutions provide a wealth of opportunities for research training.

The LSHTM and the Institute of Child Health (ICH) offer wide ranging MSc programmes, covering subjects ranging from molecular biology and pathogenesis, through epidemiology and statistics to health economics, public health and policy, and all five institutions have active and well established research programmes focussing on medical problems in the developing world. Our broad clinical training and taught course programmes attract many able young doctors with an interest in the medical problems of developing countries in Africa and Asia. They also provide a rich source of potential clinical training fellows' as can be seen from the calibre of those already recruited.
