Clinical PhD Programme 2008 – 2013

In 2007 LSHTM was awarded a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme in International Health, comprising three fellowships per year for six years.  We have recruited 18 outstanding young clinicians to this programme. Current fellows are doing their research in 7 countries in Asia and Africa.

Year 6 – 2013 

Michael Marks is a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Honiara, Solomon Islands. His research project is “Yaws in the Solomon Islands: impact of a national trachoma control programme on yaws clinical disease, sero-prevalence and drug resistance”.  Publications

Fredrick Martineau is a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme Fellow. His research project was “The path to universal health coverage: understanding the health system consequences of user-fee exemption policies for healthcare affordability and quality in low and middle income countries”, in Sierra Leone. This project is in abeyane. Fredrick is currently working on Ebola response anthropology.

Sarah Prentice is a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Entebbe, Uganda. Her research project is “Does neonatal BCG vaccination produce short and long-term heterologous protection against invasive infectious disease by enhancing the innate immune system?”. Publications

Year 5 – 2012

Laura Asher is a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Her research project is “Community-based rehabilitation for psychosis in rural Ethiopia: a cluster randomized trial”.  Publications

Sarah-Louise Bailey is a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Lusaka, Zambia. Her research project is “Understanding the threat of diabetes mellitus to tuberculosis control in sub-Saharan Africa: the impact of HIV and diabetes control”. Publications

Palwasha Khan is a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Chilumba, Malawi. Her research project is “Investigating Mycobacterium tuberculosis transmission in rural Malawi”.  Publications

Year 4 – 2011

Jaya Chidambaram is a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Tamil Nadu, India    Her research project is “Studies in the pathophysiology and management of corneal necrosis in severe microbial keratitis”.  Publications

Catherine Houlihan is a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Mwanza, Tanzania. Her research project is “Epidemiology and natural history of human papillomavirus infection in a cohort of Tanzanian girls after sexual debut”.  Publications

Anna Last was a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme Fellow carrying out clinical research based in  Bijagos Archipelago, Guinea Bissau.  Her research project is “A study of the pathogenicity of ocular strains of Chlamydia trachomatis using molecular and spatial determinants of trachoma on the Bijagos Archipelago of Guinea Bissau, West Africa”.  Publications

James Whitehorn is a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. His research project is “Improving the management of severe dengue in adults: predicting patients at risk of disease progression and assessing the efficacy of prophylactic platelets for the prevention of haemorrhage”. Year 3 – 2010

Kate Mandeville is a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme Fellow carrying out clinical research based in  Blantyre, Malawi. Her research project is “Cost-effectiveness of financial and non-financial incentives for the retention of physicians  in the Malawian public health sector”. Kate is currently seconded to the Young Professionals Programme at the World Bank until September 2014.  Publications

Cally Tann was a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Entebbe, Uganda. Her research project was “Perinatal infection as a risk factor for neonatal encephalopathy amongst term infants in Uganda: an unmatched case control study”. Publications

Year 2 – 2009

Chi Ezeifula was a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Kampala, Uganda. Her research project was “Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of primaquine for clearance of gametocytes in uncomplicated falciparum malaria: a randomised clinical trial”. Publications

Sophia Pathai was a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Cape Town, South Africa. Her research project was “Does HIV accelerate the aging process? An assessment of ophthalmic, clinical and serum parameters of aging in a cohort of HIV-infected individuals in South Africa”.  Publications

Nadja van Ginneken was a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Bangalore, India. Her research project is “The roles of non specialist health workers in mental health care provision in developing countries”.  Publications

Victoria Johnston was a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Her research project was “First-line ART failure management in resource-limited settings: using observational data to inform decisions to switch from first- to second-line ART”. Publications

Mirja Koschorke was a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Goa, India. Her research project was “A randomised controlled trial evaluation of the impact of community care on the experience of stigma and discrimination by people with schizophrenia in India”. Publications

Katharina Kranzer was a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Cape Town, South Africa. Her research project was “Tuberculosis control in a South African community with high HIV prevalence: the role of antiretroviral therapy and intensified case-finding”. Publications
